Day 4 of #Trust30 from Self Reliance
Post -it Question
That which each can do best, none but his Maker can teach him. Where is the master who could have taught Shakespeare? Where is the master who could have instructed Franklin, or Washington, or Bacon, or Newton? . . . Shakespeare will never be made by the study of Shakespeare. Do that which is assigned you, and you cannot hope too much or dare too much. – Ralph Waldo Emerson
Identify one of your biggest challenges at the moment (ie I don’t feel passionate about my work) and turn it into a question (ie How can I do work I’m passionate about?) Write it on a post-it and put it up on your bathroom mirror or the back of your front door. After 48-hours, journal what answers came up for you and be sure to evaluate them.
Bonus: tweet or blog a photo of your post-it.

My biggest challenges?
Time, motivation, concentration/focus, fear, aimlessness, blaming others for my not doing something, not knowing how to,making excuses/rationalizations…. etc.
How do I stop making excuses and do the work?
Stop concentrating on why and pick a how then begin.
Too many things to choose from.
Ho do I choose?
My rut is inaction through indecision. My biggest challenge comes from in myself, not from other things.
I can spend days constructively being distracted;
i.e. thinking/researching about blog post/article about something, go for a random exploration drive in the country with my wife and son, go for a bike ride, write a poem, play with the guitar, research online blogging, business ideas, places to travel and live, RVing, camping, traveling with small children, bicycling the US, important books to read, amusing books to read, blogs to read, reports and manifestos to read, blah, blah, blah…you get the idea.
Distraction feeds indecision which results in inaction.
I will get lost in minute details which prevent me from progressing on the larger project. While focusing on one small thing I will then find other things that I “must” now look into and spend time being distracted with.
Another problem is deciding what is important to focus on. Beyond my primary focus of my wife and son it becomes confusing on what to give my attention to. There are countless books, programs, manifestos, websites, and groups online that all promise to help you be creative and/or create your business/brand/book, etc. Most of these have some merit.
This makes it more difficult to pick just one. I have many things that I am passionate about.
Here I am getting lost in the details of a tangent. It seems that I live my life on these tangents.
How do I narrow my focus when I have many passions?
