How to Simply Write

We hear that in order to write all we have to do is write!  Just sit down and let the words flow out.  Sounds easy doesn’t it?  Well I’ve got some new for you….it is!

Alright, it isn’t always that easy. :P   I can not just sit down to write and churn out a quality blog post to put up here for my readers.  I need to follow a process to get these posts out of my head.  There are thousands of books, websites, and blogs out there that tell you how to do this.  Most of them that I have come across are really very helpful, but it can all be overwhelming at times. In addition to this, I have also written many papers and taken courses specifically for writing and composition at the college level.

unfortunately, none of that matters if I don’t follow the simplest advice that was stated at the beginning of this post…..just write!

I sit down and write in my notebook almost everyday.  The physical act of writing my form meditation.  It forces your mind to work at a slower pace than with typing.  While typing our fingers can fly over the keys spilling out words almost as fast as our minds can produce them. (Well not in my case, I still need practice :P )  When I sit down with my grandfather’s fountain pen and write in my notebook the words come out in a much slower and more natural pace.  It encourages me to be more aware and present in the process of creation.  The words are fresh and new but not so dizzying and temporary as the bits and bytes of the word processor.

One of the best things to do to get yourself writing is to switch gears.   This way the mind is forced to work in a different pattern than it is used to.  This is easy for you to do.  All you need is a quiet place to sit with your notebook and a pen.

Try this:

Tools you need:  pen or pencil, notebook

  1. Sit in a quiet spot with no distractions.  Turn off the cell phone and any music.
  2. Clear off your writing space.  You only need your pen and your notebook.  The less to distract you the better.
  3. Write!

I know it sounds too easy but it really is just that. Just write about what ever you want to write about.  For me I might use it to explore some new blog ideas, or I will explore some thoughts about some new productivity hack I’ve read, or I might write a new poem!  The important thing is that your mind and your hand are acting as one continuous unit.  Don’t approach this writing with any ideas of what you want this to be, don’t go into this with heavy expectations.  This is not the next great American novel or the next Technocrati front page post.  This is your space for you and your writing mind to stretch out and see what happens.

How do you get yourself to write?
